Unpacking the Black Box: Studying the Relationship Between Socioeconomic Development and Health

To understand the black box, this paper provides a conceptual framework around which a research protocol is built.

PART I: Begins by reviewing definitions of health, paying close attention to the concept that health is a dynamic state with multiple determinants.

PART II: Creates a Health Status model of health where the production of health/illness is considered to be based on simplified health inputs giving rise to a resulting health output.

PART III: Explores a method of examining the mechanism through which health interventions produce health outcomes.

PART IV: Takes the reader through an exercise that defines the mechanism through which health interventions produce health outcomes.

PART V: Proposes a research protocol for understanding the mechanism by which health interventions produce health outcomes.
